PRIVATE SCHOOLS BANNED FROM HOSTING BECE, PRIMARY SCHOOL LEAVING EXAMS IN EDO

The  government of Edo State has taking a firm stand against allowing  private schools  to host the Junior Secondary School’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) and Primary School Leaving Certificate Examination.

Speaking with newsmen yesterday in Benin, the Commissioner of Communication and Orientation, Chris Nehikhare disclosed that the government would announce the approved centres where the examinations would take place in March 2023.

Nehikhare stressed that the reforms currently ongoing in the education sector in Edo state are designed to ensure that exams will no longer be written in four-bedroom buildings or business centres but in approved  centres by the government.

He insisted that private schools that are not ready to abide by these reforms would not be allowed to operate in the state.

Also, he explained that the decision to have designated centres for these examinations was to forestall malpractices, particularly  with  centres where mercenaries are brought into schools to sit for the examination for students.

Whist reacting to a video which has gone viral of a protest by some members of the private school owners association, Nehikhare maintained that the reforms in the education sector will not only  be for the benefit of the parents but for the students and the educational advancement of Edo state.

Chris Nehikhare concluded that the reforms in the educational sector by the government have started yielding results as the state emerged first in the 2022 West African School Certificate Examination (WASCE) with 92.8 passes including Mathematics and English Language.
